Javier Zabala

(León, Spain 1962)

He started degrees in veterinary medicine and law, but he left them to study illustration and graphic design at the Oviedo and Madrid Schools of Art.

In 1989 he moved to Madrid. He worked as an illustrator in various fields: magazines, advertising, cartoons …. He currently works for the most important Spanish publishers and some of the most prestigious foreign ones.

He has illustrated more than 70 books, some of which he is also the writer. His books has been translated to 15 languages.

In 2000 he was selected by the Culture Spanish Ministry to take part in the travelling exhibition A todo color which showed the Works of the most important Spanish illustrators in Europe and America.

In 2003 he participates in the 21 Children Illustration Internacional Exhibition Le Immagini Della Fantasia. In that occasion he was selected to make the supplement of the catalogue How an illustrated book is born for his book “Barcellona” published by Bohem Press. Since then, he has usually been invited to take part in this international exhibition.

Since 2003, he has also been invited to participate in the Internacional Exhibitions I colori del Sacro in Padova (Italy)

In 2005 he received an “Honourable Mention for the Best Fiction Book” for his book “Pictogramas en la Historia de D. Quijote de la Mancha” published by SM, at the Bologna International Children´s Book Fair.

He was chosen to exhibit his work at the “Ilustrisimos” exhibition organised by the Ministry of Culture to represent Spain at the Bologna International Fair.

That same year, he won the 2005 Illustration National Award for “El Soldadito Salomón” published by SM. This is the most important prize given to an illustrator in Spain.

2007 The White Ravens Award (Internationale Jugendbibliotek, Munich) for the book “Las Cosas perdidas” published by Edelvives.

In 2007, he organises and teaches the Illustration Course 1+UNO during the 2nd Children´s Books Fair “Leer León” (Spain). 35 professional illustrators from 7 different countries were selected to participate in the course out of 120 candidates.

In 2008 he received his second Special BolognaRagazzi Award, an “Honourable Mention for Children Poetry” for his book “Santiago”, a poem by Federico García Lorca, published by Libros del Zorro Rojo.

2009. El Banco del Libro de Venezuela gave him the first price in the “Best children book category” for his book “Sin los Ojos” by Editorial SM.

2009. Finalist of the Junceda Iberia Award for “Bartleby, the scrivener” by Herman Melvilla, published by Nórdica Libros.

2009. Selected for the Exhibition and Catalogue in the 2nd Picture Book Festival CJ in Corea.

2010. Selected for the Exhibition and Catalogue of the Biennial Internacional Ilustration Ilustrarte in Lisbon, Portugal.

2010. Selected in the Honour List CCEI for “El hombre que compró la ciudad de Estocolmo” by Gianni Rodari published by SM.

He was selected as Illustrator of the month in July 2010 by ZIZI, Illustrators Collective, Italy.

2010. The Catalonian Professional Illustrators Association (APIC) awarded him the Junceda Iberia for “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare, published by Nórdica Libros.

He usually collaborates with various Universities , Autonomous Region Governments, City Councils… in workshops, lectures and round-tables.

He gives lessons and lectures in Public Libraries and Schools of Arts in Europe and LatinAmerica.

Since 2006, he is a teacher of Illustration in the Internacional Summer Courses at Macerata University and in the Rome Public Libraries. Since 2009 he is a professor of the Master in illustration, also in the University of Macerata, Italy.
