Javier Zabala’s workshop in Saeed Ensafi’s art studio on 30th and 31th of August 2010
Javier Zabala attended a meeting and a workshop on August invitation of "Saeed Ensafi" in Iran. This event expected to have an especial effect on illustration art in Iran, has been managed by "Saeed Ensafi" and "Sahar Bardaei". "Saeed Ensafi" about the detail and programming this event says: I have known "Javier Zabala" since 2008; I have seen his books in Bolognia’s exhibition for children’s book, and have known each other from far. The idea of observing the workshop clicked my mind since my wife and I decided to change our home to a studio, and observe illustration work. In fact we wanted to share our international experience in the studio. I was teaching Javier Zabala’s books in my summer sessions classes, and I was surveying his thoughts how he bring his thought to an illustration story.
This year first of spring we had a cultural program in turkey, which was observed in Bilkent University in Ankara, Zabala was one of those who was preceding our program. He was writing us and wishing us good luck. After returning from Turkey I decided to invite him, I contacted him and he accepted on my first request, we talked about details and agreed.
He requested to perform a small exhibition in the studio, I accepted and started to get ready suddenly it came to my mind that to perform it in a professional Gallery which was more convenient and useful for everyone to attend. So, we started to talk about this event with Mohsen’s Gallery director "Ehsan Rasoulof" who is a very good friend of mine, so we agreed to arrange a one-day exhibition by the name of “EVENT” with an open circle of discussion, so all the artists could have a comfortable confrontation with him. After all the arrangements Javier came to Tehran.

It was a two sequence day workshop in Ensafi’s art studio which first was the opening-day of the workshop and an open house meeting of the artists in Mohsen’s Gallery.
The first day of workshop started, By "Javier Zabala", "Saeed Ensafi" and "Sahar Bardaei" Monday morning 30th August . Many students attended too.
At first everyone got introduced then everyone talked about their point of views on illustration, then Zabala discussed about his views and books illustration which he is very famous in them at the world. Among his conversation with the group he introduced some of his books and explained their techniques. He also taught the group Mono-prints technique and the students did some training.
The second day started as the first and Zabala taught some of his personal techniques which he used in his successful books, and he ended the workshop with the title of “CITY”.
Mohsen’s gallery represented a one-day exhibition for Zabala’s work at the afternoon of the same day after workshop. The exhibition started with the presence of "Javier Zabala" and some Iranian famous illustrators such as: "Saeed Ensafi", "Morteza Zahedi"and "Sahar Bardaei".
The exhibition discussion from the first minutes started because being in such atmosphere with so many known illustrators was amazing in now-days in Iranian society.
Opuses that were represented were from Javier Zabala’s books illustration. That made thirty piece of art. After the opening everyone was invited in multimedia room for an open conversation.
"Javier Zabala" as the first speaker with his Spanish translator gave "Saeed Ensafi" and his associates, his appreciation, he started his speech:
“I am very happy being in your society, Iran is a country with high cultural history while ago I was speaking with "Morteza Zahedi" about "Farshid Mesghali" who has received Anderson pries, there are not many countries to receive such pries.
Later he separated his speech in two parts. First he spoke about his tecqunics on his books such as: Hamlet by Shekspear, Bartelbi by Herman Melviel, Birds, Pearl, Dragon, and Santiago which very thoughtful for the audience. The second session was a conference with “effects of eastern Europe academy” title. By introducing some artists of this academy he named them the best illustrators of the world in the 20th century.
In continue "Morteza Zahedi" started as the second speaker:
“I thank "Saeed Ensafi" for organizing this important event, because "Javier Zabala" is very well known in illustration world at this time, there were many other illustrators as Mr. Stphan Zavrel who was very famous in his time but "Javier Zabala" is our time illustrator who is standing with us now.
This is a very rare opportunity that our illustrators are not able to arrange. We are living in a much closed ambiance that has all wrong information either imaginary or surrealistic. For the same reason let us try harder to get to know the other people and their way of thinking. I think it is very important for the young illustrators to understand these points of view. Because an artistic life has an artistic opus! When we don’t have an artistic moment we cannot have a real experience then we cannot have a real thought about our environment, or we will have only one decade of useful illustrative life”.
